    What Is Book Value? The term book value is used in business quite frequently, but many people, and even their attorneys, lack a clear understanding of exactly what book value is and what it represents.Book value is the difference between assets (what is owned) and liabilities (what is owed). It appears on a company’s balance sheet under shareholders' equity or a similar section.
